The University for Development Studies (UDS) has awarded an honorary doctorate degree to the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, in recognition of his remarkable contributions to education, peacebuilding, and social advancement within the Dagbon Kingdom and the wider Northern Region.

The ceremony, held in Tamale, brought together Paramount Chiefs of Dagbon, government officials, Members of Parliament, religious and traditional leaders, students, and representatives from state agencies and civil society organisations.

UDS Vice-Chancellor, Professor Seidu Alhassan, praised the Ya-Na’s transformative leadership, noting that his tireless efforts had repositioned Dagbon from a hotspot of conflict to a model of unity and development.
“The Overlord has succeeded in converting conflict into cohesion, unity, and progress. Dagbon has emerged stronger—more stable, united, and forward-looking,” he said.

Prof Alhassan highlighted the Ya-Na’s role in fostering reconciliation and dialogue, as well as his commitment to youth development and partnership with development organisations. He also acknowledged the Ya-Na’s substantial support for education, including the allocation of 500 acres of land for a new UDS campus in Yendi and the provision of a facility to kick-start academic activities.

Responding to the honour, Ya-Na Abukari II, represented by Dr Jacob Mahama, Chief of Zangbalun, expressed gratitude to the university. He described the recognition as a shared achievement for the entire Dagbon Kingdom and all individuals contributing to its growth.
“This honour is not mine alone but belongs to everyone who continues to support Dagbon with their resources and goodwill,” he remarked.

He reiterated his commitment to strengthening education and supporting UDS in its mission to drive regional development.

Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ali Adolf John, applauded the university for celebrating the Ya-Na’s visionary leadership, noting that the award reflects his long-standing dedication to societal progress.
