President John Mahama has commissioned a newly constructed chancery for Ghana’s Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The announcement was made in a Facebook post by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who described the facility as far more than a routine administrative structure.

According to the Minister, the new chancery represents “an affirmation of Ghana’s firm belief in multilateralism” and a strong demonstration of the country’s enduring commitment to the ideals and vision of the African Union.

Mr Ablakwa noted that the commissioning underscores President Mahama’s readiness to assume the Chairmanship of the African Union next year, a development expected to further enhance Ghana’s diplomatic standing and influence across the continent.

The chancery project spans more than a decade, having originated in 2016 when funding was secured under the SG-SSB facility. Although initial arrangements were completed that year, construction was delayed due to economic difficulties and later stalled entirely amid broader fiscal constraints.

The Foreign Minister said the current administration revived the project by settling outstanding Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) last year, paving the way for construction to resume and ultimately reach completion.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos, whose presence Ghanaian officials acknowledged with “profound appreciation.”

Ghana and Ethiopia share longstanding cordial relations rooted in Pan-African ideals and sustained cooperation within multilateral institutions.

The new chancery is expected to strengthen diplomatic coordination, promote trade and investment, and deepen cultural and political ties between Ghana and Ethiopia.
