The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has directed the management of Ghana Digital Centres Limited (GDCL) to immediately reverse its decision to temporarily suspend the employment contracts of all staff following recent flood damage.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, the Ministry said it had taken note of a circular from GDCL announcing the suspension of staff contracts pending a full assessment of damage caused by the heavy rains on June 29, 2026.
However, the Ministry strongly disagreed with the decision, instructing management to withdraw it with immediate effect.
“The Ministry takes a very strong view of the directive and immediately instructs Management to reverse that decision. All GDCL staff are to disregard the directive,” the statement said.
The Ministry stressed that the decision was particularly inappropriate given that many employees were themselves affected by the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra on June 29.
“At a time when staff have been personally affected by the June 29th floods, the Ministry stands with its staff and the staff of all our agencies,” it added.
The Ministry further disclosed that GDCL management has been invited to a meeting on Thursday, July 2, following a visit to the facility by the sector Minister on June 30.
The meeting is expected to assess the extent of damage to the facility and affected businesses, as well as discuss the circumstances surrounding the suspension directive.
The intervention effectively halts the implementation of GDCL’s earlier notice, which had directed staff to submit laptops and company assets and indicated that employment contracts would be temporarily suspended while recovery works were undertaken.
The notice had also indicated that June 2026 salaries would be paid in due course, pending the restoration of operations.
The Ministry’s directive restores normal employment status for staff while broader recovery and assessment efforts continue at the facility.
