England Under-21 forward Cole Palmer has joined Chelsea from Manchester City for an initial £40 million.

The 21-year-old signed a seven-year contract with an additional year’s option, with the agreement also containing an additional £2.5 million in add-ons.

Palmer, a product of the City academy, played for the England team that won the European Under-21 Championship earlier this summer.

‘‘I’m excited to get started and it feels great to sign,’ said Palmer. ‘I’ve joined Chelsea because the project here sounds good and because of the platform I will have to try to showcase my talents. It is a young and hungry squad and, hopefully, we can do something special here,’’ he said.

Palmer entered the Manchester City academy at the Under-8 level and progressed through the club’s youth divisions. During the 2019–20 season, he led City’s Under-18s to the FA Youth Cup victory by scoring in the match against Chelsea.

Last season, the 21-year-old established himself as a regular in the City first-team squad. He made 25 appearances across all competitions and ended the campaign as a Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup winner.
