The Ghana International River Festival 2024 has been officially launched in Sogakope, South Tongu district of the Volta Region, with a call to action to protect Ghana’s freshwater resources.

Mr. Mawufemor Korbla Nornyibey, Event Director of the festival, emphasized the importance of rivers in sustaining livelihoods and ensuring the well-being of communities.

He said the festival aimed to raise awareness about the impact of illegal mining activities and the use of mercury and cyanide on river bodies.

Mr. Nornyibey stressed the need for collective action to protect Ghana’s freshwater resources, saying, “It is our duty to rise above the challenges and work together – government, civil society, local communities, businesses, and environmental advocates.”

Mr. Agbeko Francis Abloh, Chairperson of the event, also lamented the impact of illegal mining on river bodies and advocated collective effort to protect the Volta River.

The festival promises to be a fun-packed event, featuring a range of activities, including cultural performances, educational programs, and family-oriented celebrations.

The event will also raise funds to acquire an ambulance or rescue boat to provide health support and emergency services along the Volta River and to support the fight against illegal mining activities and pollution of river bodies.
