President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the allocation for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) under the District Assemblies Common Fund will rise from three to five per cent beginning in 2026.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Tertiary Education Programme for Persons with Disabilities, he announced that every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) will establish a Disability Desk. The desk will work with local branches of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled to develop an annual budget outlining how the new five per cent allocation will be used.

The initiative seeks to enhance financial and social support for PWDs nationwide.

President Mahama also pledged that a minimum five per cent employment quota for PWDs in both public and private institutions will be enforced, with tax incentives offered to private companies that comply.

He added that government will soon introduce amendments to the 2006 Persons with Disabilities Act, alongside a new Legislative Instrument, to ensure the law reflects current conditions and needs.
