The Kadjebi District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has sensitized residents of Kadjebi on bushfires and fire outbreak preventions.

The engagement sought to raise awareness about fire hazards and how best to prevent them. Ms. Janet Yaa Obido, an Assistant Civic Education Officer, engaging with the students of Kadjebi E.P Central Junior High School (JHS), asked the residents, especially farmers, hunters and palm wine tappers to exercise caution when handling fire, particularly in the bush or outdoors, to prevent bushfires.

She said fire outbreaks and bushfires could have severe and long-term impacts on the environment, wildlife, human health, economies, and human communities.

Ms. Obido named the loss of biodiversity and wildlife habitats, respiratory issues, soil erosion and landslides, air and water pollution, displacement of people and communities, destruction of homes and infrastructure, among others as some of the negative impacts of bushfires.

She said to prevent these, the District Directorate, has embarked on community sensitization programmes using Community Information Centers, visits to schools, churches and mosques to educate them on the need to prevent fire outbreaks.  She called on the students to convey the message to their parents for them to help intensify the education on fire prevention since they were in the dry season. She said: “fire is a good servant, but a bad master,” if not controlled and used properly.

Ms. Obido thus, advised residents to ensure that fires were completely extinguished before leaving them unattended, keep flammable materials away from heat sources, avoid overloading electrical outlets and extension cords, dispose of cigarettes and matches properly. She also advised farmers desirous of planting during the season, to create fire belts around cleared lands before setting fire to them to help prevent bushfires.
