Mr. Dominic Adomah, the Dormaa Central Constituency Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged President John Dramani Mahama to tighten the loopholes in the nation’s tax systems.

He said that would help stem the recurring waste in public expenditure and called on the government to put in place realistic measures to fight smuggling and do more to curb the growing trend of corruption in the various sectors of the economy.
Mr. Adomah said he was also highly optimistic that the government would also utilize taxes and levies judiciously for economic development.

He said if taxes and levies were poorly managed it overburdened the poor, the impoverished and the ordinary citizenry, rebutting that “the NDC never say anywhere in the 2024 electioneering that it will use the use the E-levy for the establishment of its Women’s Bank policy.”

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Dormaa-Ahenkro in the Bono Region, Mr. Adomah said the “NDC already knows in advance the consequences likely to occur after scrapping the e-levy, the COVID 19 and the betting taxes as well as the Emission levy”.

He was reacting to recommendations by the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) to the government to rescind the NDC’s 2024 electioneering promise to abolish the e levy if the party won the General Elections.
Those taxes, he added, contributed immensely to boosting the revenue mobilization base of the nation, assuring that the government would ensure that revenue mobilized were utilized to the benefit of the masses.

However, Mr. Adomah recommended that taxes on electronic transactions ought to be cancelled, saying “there are several alternatives and innovations the government can generate revenue”.
He said the re-introduction of the roads toll, export of human resources and adding value to raw materials remained an index to improve the nation’s revenue mobilization drive.
