Junior High School students in the Agbozume Circuit in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, have benefited from a practical science training programme organized by Education Innovators, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

The training is part of the continuous effort being made by the Organization to improve students’ performances in the science examinations in the area, through practical work.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and hands-on experience, especially in areas where students lack access to laboratory facilities. Students from various schools in the area were brought together to participate in practical science sessions, as most of them had never conducted experiments in a science laboratory before, despite preparing for their final exams that include practical components.

Led by Dr Francis Doku, a seasoned science educator and the Chief Executive Officer of Education Innovators, the team utilized laboratory equipment to provide students with a unique learning experience. Dr Doku expressed confidence that this practical exposure would significantly enhance the students’ understanding of scientific concepts and improve their exam results.

“As a science teacher, I have witnessed the difficulties students face in grasping scientific principles due to a lack of hands-on experience. By giving them the opportunity to engage in practical work, we are confident that they will perform better in their exams,” Dr Doku said. He said the initiative had received strong support from local education officials. Mr Cril Soglo, the Deputy Director of Education in Ketu South, lauded the programme and acknowledged its positive impact on students’ academic performance.

“We are grateful for the support of Education Innovators, and we encourage other organizations to follow their example. This initiative is already making a significant difference,” he noted. Madam Vivian Adonu, the Science Coordinator for the Ketu South Municipality, also commended the programme, describing it as “very timely and helpful.”

She urged parents to support their children by contributing to such initiatives, which would ultimately improve their academic success. Students who participated in the programme expressed their excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to engage in practical science for the first time, attesting it its impact and awakening confidence in them to pass their exams.

The Education Innovators’ initiative is an inspiring example of how NGOs can play a vital role in enhancing education in Ghana. By addressing the lack of practical science education, the organization is helping to build a stronger foundation for students, equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to excel in their academic and professional pursuits.
