The Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has announced a partnership with Fidelity Bank to deploy about 5,000 new point-of-sale (POS) terminals to enhance sales, efficiency, and revenue generation.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Mr. Abdul-Salam explained that the move forms part of the Authority’s strategy to modernise operations and tackle the growing menace of illegal lottery operators.

He said several existing machines had become obsolete, prompting the replacement initiative with the new POS devices under the Fidelity Bank arrangement. “We believe that in the coming year, this will significantly improve our operations,” he noted.

To further address the decline in lottery revenue, Mr. Abdul-Salam revealed that the NLA was seeking legal guidance from the Attorney General regarding its collaboration with the Coalition of Concerned Lotto Agents and Writers Association of Ghana (CLAAG). The initiative aims to issue identifiable stickers to all registered Private Lotto Operators (PLOs), allowing enforcement agencies to use smart devices to verify legitimate operators and clamp down on illegal ones.

He added that certain areas currently lack NLA presence, providing opportunities for unlicensed operators. However, with the introduction of the new POS terminals and intensified enforcement, those areas will be integrated into the Authority’s operations.

The NLA expects to implement these measures in the coming year, as part of broader efforts to boost revenue and strengthen regulatory compliance in Ghana’s lottery industry.
