Scores of residents and business owners are counting their losses after a devastating fire swept through over 100 wooden structures at the Tema Heavy Industrial Area on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The blaze, which started around 11:00 p.m. on June 18, is believed to have originated from a kiosk where cooking was taking place.

Eyewitnesses say the flames quickly spread to surrounding structures, consuming properties and livelihoods in their path.

Many of the structures, mostly makeshift wooden buildings, were completely destroyed, leaving residents with nothing to salvage. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

However, victims have expressed frustration over what they describe as a slow response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

They claim the delay in arrival allowed the fire to spread uncontrollably

“I was asleep with my daughter that night while my elder brother was at church. Later, he called me to come outside because there was a fire. When I heard the sound of the flames, I rushed out almost naked.

“As we speak, I’ve lost everything. We hear the person who caused the fire has fled. He should keep running and make sure we never set eyes on him again. In the meantime, we are appealing to the government to come to our aid,” one resident told Citi News.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage. Meanwhile, displaced residents are appealing for urgent support as they come to terms with the destruction.
