President John Dramani Mahama will open the National Education Forum on Tuesday February 18, 2025, in Ho in the Volta Region.

The nation-wide Forum, which will end on February 28, 2025, is on the theme, ” Transforming Education for a Sustainable Future.” Professor George K.T. Oduro, Chairman of the National Education Forum Planning Committee, announced at a press briefing on Tuesday.

Prof. Joseph S.Agbenyega and Prof Kwame Akyeampong will be the Ghanaian Diaspora keynote speakers at the forum. The forum will be structured along zonal stakeholder engagement and town hall meetings under five thematic areas.

The areas are infrastructure; quality education; regulations, accountability and governance; education financing; and research and data. Prof. Oduro said the zonal engagement in Volta and Oti regions would take place on February 19, 2025, in Ho.

Greater Accra and Eastern regions engagement will take place in February 21, in Accra, Western and Central Regions will also have their day on February 21 in Cape Coast. Bolgatanga will host Upper East and Upper West in February 24, while Sunyani hosts Western North, Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East on the same February 24.

Upper West, Savannah and Northern regions engagement will take place on February 25 in Tamale, while Ashanti region engagement takes place on February 26 in Kumasi. There will be a two-day validation from February 27 to 28, 2025.

Prof Oduro said the Committee arrived at the theme by interrogating the strategic plan for education (2018-2030), keeping in mind the manifesto of the National Democratic Congress, and discussions with key stakeholders in the sector.

The theme, the Professor said, provided a broader framework within which the interrogation of issues at the forum would be achieved. He said a page had been created on the Ministry of Education website (nef@moe.gov.gh) for citizens and the diaspora to anonymously submit comments, proposals, and information on relevant education to the Committee.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, on February 5, inaugurated an eight-member National Education Forum Planning Committee to help in finding answers on how the government could sustain the Free Senior High School policy.

As part of the Terms of Reference, the committee is to develop a theme and sub-themes to guide the stakeholder engagement, identify key stakeholders in the education sector, including students, parents, teachers, researchers, civil society organisations, and development partners.

Other members are Professor Goski Alabi, Professor Rosemary Bosu, Dr Samuel Awuku, and Professor Smile Dzisi. The rest are Mr Kofi Asare, Mr Stephen Owusu, and Mr Inusah Shiraz.
