The host of current Affairs program, the Reporters Roundtable and premier anchor of the Energy News segment of the news on Ghana Television and GBCNews beat seven other contenders to grab the coveted prize validated by Mazars, a leading international audit, tax and advisory firm.

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) had four nominations in the Reporter of the Year category. These were Dominic Hlordzi, Shirley Bawuah and Kingsley Nana Boadu.

The Energy Reporter of the Year Category, is awarded to outstanding Journalist or media personnel, who has impacted the energy sector and the community through sound reporting and outstanding work. The nominee must have presented relevant, credible and impactful industry news.

Rebekah’s story looked at government support to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity generation mix. She touched on Ghana’s effort through the Ministry of Energy together with the Energy Commission and other private sector players is championing an E-mobile initiative as part of the drive Electric project aimed at promoting electric vehicles on Ghana’s roads, reduce vehicular pollution and carbon emissions and ensure Ghana do not become a dumping ground for fossil fueled vehicles.

“This is the third year of making the nominees list for the Ghana Energy Awards. I am extremely grateful to God that in the third year which is significant biblically and a tough year for the world, God in His infinite wisdom made me win this prestigious award. It has been tough but it ended in Praise.

“I am a serial award winner, but this award is one that I prayed through till the end even though I believed I had a globally compelling documentary on electric vehicles and the need for Ghana to transition quickly, Rebekah said in an interview.

“I covered the launch of this year’s event and filed immediately -if not the first, one of the first, when the award window was opened because I knew it off the top of my head.

“Unfortunately for me when the nominees list was first published my name was missing. It was by divine intervention that the organizers traced my entry and made a Publication in the Dailies later. Up until then, my face was not on their flyers and interestingly, complimentary cards that were sent to my organization for nominees had mine missing. I further inquired and it was a last-minute call from organizers that handed over my ticket at the entry point, only to see my name as number one in the brochure. I exclaimed, God may I be preferred amongst the lot on the number 1 spot and it just happened.”

The event had the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who stood in for the President of the Republic as Special Guest of honour.

This year’s Energy Personality of the year went to ING. Harriette Amissah Arthur and ING Emmanuel Antwi Darkwa of the VRA.

The Ghana Energy Awards has over time positioned itself as a fast-growing brand open to change.

The awards scheme has continually realigned the purpose of its award categories to embrace the changing trends and evolving situations faced by the sector.
