Gender Minister Supports Family of Abused 8-Year-Old Girl

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has donated GH¢5,000 and relief items to the family of eight-year-old Jalila Abdul Jalil, who was allegedly abused at her school in Dodowa, as part of government efforts to ensure the child’s safety, recovery, and access to justice.

The donation was made during an official visit by the Minister to the child and her family, following a report by Channel One TV on the alleged abuse involving the Class Two pupil of St. Olives Grammar Boarding School. The Ministry said the visit was to demonstrate the state’s support while ensuring the child’s protection, rehabilitation, and long-term welfare.

Speaking to the family, Dr Lartey described the incident as deeply disturbing and assured them that the government would provide full medical, psychosocial, and welfare support to the child. She also pledged that the Ministry would closely monitor the case until it is fully resolved.

The Minister reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy on child abuse, stressing that “anybody who harms a child harms the nation,” and assured the family that justice would be pursued regardless of the status or identity of those involved.

In addition to the cash donation, the Ministry presented food items and household supplies to help ease the family’s immediate needs, as part of what officials described as a broader state response to child abuse cases.

Dr Lartey also praised Channel One TV and other media outlets for bringing the case to public attention, noting that responsible journalism is crucial in exposing abuse, protecting vulnerable children, and promoting accountability.
