The Rotary Club of Kumasi has commenced the construction of sanitary facilities in 12 selected schools in the Ashanti Region in line with Rotary International’s focus on water and sanitation.

The project, worth $70,000, includes the provision of 12 boreholes and 75 micro flush toilets for the beneficiary schools in Kumasi and Obuasi.

A symbolic sod-cutting ceremony was held at Brofoyedru D/A Primary School to kick start the project to address water and sanitation challenges facing the schools.

Over the years, pupils and teachers of Brofoyedru Primary School had to cross the main street linking the school and the community to access potable drinking water and attend to nature’s call, hampering teaching and learning in the school.

Mr Asare Bediako, Headmasters of the school, speaking at the ceremony, commended the Rotary Club of Kumasi and their partners for coming to their aid with the provision of a washroom facility and a borehole.

The Rotary club of Kumasi and the Calgary Stampede Rotary Club of Canada are funding the project.

Nana Afia Osei Asamoah, President of the Club, said the provision of water and sanitation facilities was one of the seven key areas of Rotary International’s engagement with communities worldwide under the theme “Magic of Rotary” for the 2024/25 Rotary year.

She said they were motivated by a request from the authorities of the school to come to their aid to fix the challenges they were grappling with.

“As a club, we are always willing to support humanity.

We decided to offer support to the school after they submitted their request which was consistent with the objectives of rotary such as provision of WASH facilities, economic empowerment, and child health, the President noted.

The project, according to her, would be completed and handed over to the authorities of the school within one year.
