Team Kpando Constituency wins maiden edition of Minister’s cup

Team Kpando Constituency has emerged winners of the maiden edition of the Volta Regional Minister’s Cup organised by Mr James Gunu, the Regional Minister.

They defeated Team Tongu by 9-8 on penalties after a goalless draw game in regulation time during the finals of the competition after the team clenched 1-0 and 2-0 victories against Team Kpetoe-Ziope/Adaklu and Team Dayi constituencies at the group stage and semifinals, respectively.

As champions, Team Kpando took home Gh¢ 3,000, a trophy, medals, set of jersey and football as the prizes for the first position. Mr Anthony For, the Coach of Team Kpando, who also received Best Coach award, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said that the victory demonstrated the team’s hard work and determination for the coveted trophy.

“The challenge we have was that the time for our preparations was limited to train together, but we worked hard for the trophy, we thank God for it,” he said. He thanked the Regional Minister and the executives of Volta Regional Football Association for organising a smooth and successful game and pledged that the team would work harder to defend the trophy in the next edition.

He commended the players, the technical team and the fans for the various supporting roles played for a successful victory. Meanwhile, team Tongu, the first runner-up received Gh¢2,000, a set of jersey and a football whilst the six other participating teams which include team Southern A and B, Hohoe/Afadjato,  Dayi, Kpetoe-Ziope/Adaklu and Ho constituencies took home Gh¢ 500, football and a set of jersey each.

In the individual’s awards category, Nortu Paul of team Tongu was named best player, while Zaphnart Kpeti and Samuel Kunjam of team Kpando were adjudged best goalkeeper and highest goals scorer respectively.

Mr Gunu, the Regional Minister, in his closing remarks, commended all teams for displaying good sportsmanship with humility and self-discipline throughout the successful tournament that served as a platform for various young players to display their football talents and skills.

“We thanked God for a successful tournament which was the first edition, we would go back to the drawing board, do the necessary needful corrections towards the next edition.” He announced that the next edition of the Minister’s cup would allow all the 18 constituencies produce their own teams each to participate without the merging system.

Some sports fans and enthusiasts GNA spoke with after the tournament commended Mr Gunu and Mr Gabriel Kwamiga Atokple, the Volta Regional Council of State Member as well as the Volta Regional Football Association for a successful and smooth tournament and look up to the next edition.
