A toll booth attendant on the Tema-Motorway is feared dead, with another in a critical condition after a tipper truck collided with the booth.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Monday morning, July 12, 2021.
It is unclear what caused the speeding truck to crash into the toll booth, completely destroying the building in the process.
Rescuers had to clear the debris that had ‘buried’ the surviving attendant (a physically challenged person) before he was rescued.
He noted that the driver of the tipper truck was nowhere to be found after the accident.
The eyewitness added that as of the time of filing the report(7:45 am), both the Ambulance Service and the Police were yet to arrive at the scene.
A video of the crash shows the body of the attendant, who is yet to be identified, lying on the ground motionless, with many onlookers at the scene.
“I was on the Spintex-Roadside but a few meters away from the toll booth, I saw the tipper-driver rushing to the booth at the Tema side. The rate at which he was speeding showed that something was definitely going wrong. Either his brake had failed or he was an inexperienced driver”, Kingsley Dunyo, an eyewitness told Citi News
The Tema Regional Commander of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), Chief Supt. William Asante explained on Citi FM that “a vehicle had stopped to pay the toll when the speeding tipper truck carelessly run into the toll booth”. He added that the injured victims of the accident have been admitted at the Tema General Hospital.
