The Palestinian Ambassador to Ghana has rejected President Donald Trump’s proposal for the US to take over Gaza and resettle the 2.1 million Palestinians living in the area.

Mr. Abdulfatah Ahmed Khalil Alsattari told the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday that Palestinians “prefer to live in their tents than to be displaced” and that the destruction of their homes “will not compel Palestinians to leave their land.” He said that Mr. Trump’s proposal to resettle Palestinians “is not applicable” and not compliant with international laws.

“The plan will be difficult to implement.” Mr. Alsattari said, adding: “the people of Palestine will not leave their land.” “About 6,000 Palestinians are still under the rubble. The people smell death, but they are still happy to return home.” Mr. Alsattari added. Mr. Trump’s idea about the US taking over Gaza has been widely condemned and rejected by international leaders but welcomed by Israel.

The United Nations has warned against “any form of ethnic cleansing” Israel launched a campaign to “destroy Hamas” in response to a cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. Data from Gaza’s Health Ministry indicate that at least 47,000 Palestinians have been killed since the commencement of the 15-month war.

A ceasefire and hostage release deal are currently in force, but experts warn the deal was fragile amid uncertainty. Mr. Alsattari told the GNA that the people of Gaza would only accept a two-state solution that was recognized the statehood of Palestine. He said the people of Palestine “are very strong” to rebuild and appealed to Arabic states to support the rebuilding of Gaza.

“We the Palestinians are strong with the support of our brothers and those who uphold peace, democracy, and freedom.” Mr. Alsattari added.
