The Volta River Authority (VRA) has announced that the relocation of the Thermal Power Plant, formerly called the AMERI Power Plant, to Kumasi will be completed by December 2025.

The second phase of the project will see the transfer of the remaining four units from the Western Region to Awomaso to boost electricity supply in the Ashanti Region and northern Ghana.

According to VRA Chief Executive Officer, Edward Ekow Obeng Kenzo, the relocation will enhance power supply and ensure greater stability of the national grid. He disclosed this during an inspection of the VRA substation at Awomaso in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, October 1.

Meanwhile, Parliament’s Select Committee on Energy has underscored the need for stronger stakeholder engagement to protect Ghana Grid Company Limited’s powerlines, which face increasing threats from illegal mining.

The Committee also expressed concern about the risks posed to gas pipelines by galamsey operations and encroachment, pledging to work with relevant ministries and agencies to curb the menace. Deputy Ranking Member Collins Adomako Mensah appealed for collective national action to keep miners and encroachers away from critical energy infrastructure.

Additionally, the Committee promised to take up with the Finance Ministry issues raised by the VRA regarding tax exemptions on imported equipment. Acting Chairperson Albert Nyakotey Tetteh and Mr. Adomako Mensah further highlighted the need for sustained investments in Ghana’s energy sector, despite the current improvements in electricity supply.
