Archbishop Peter Akwasi Sarpong backs the #FixTheCountry campaign

Former Archbishop of the Catholic Church’s Kumasi Diocese, Emeritus Archbishop Peter Akwasi Sarpong, has expressed his full support for the #FixTheCountry campaign by the country’s youth, lamenting that Ghana’s form of democracy practiced by the country’s political class is a caricature of what true democracy should be.

The Acrhbishop in an interview on Akoma FM said, “The democracy as practiced in Ghana is a caricature of democracy. The democracy as practiced in Ghana is a caricature of democracy. It’s a caricature of democracy because what is democracy? Is it intimidation? Is it deceit? Is it corruption?”

Ghana’s democracy, according to Archbishop Peter, is a farce because democracy, as Abraham Lincoln stated, should be a rule of the people, by the people, and for the people.

He then asserted that all indications indicate that democracy in Ghana is not by the people and certainly not for the people, but rather by a few.

The archbishop further said, “The democracy practiced in Ghana is only fraught with deceit, intimidation, bribery and corruption, resulting in politicians buying votes to go to parliament in order to enrich themselves at the expense of the taxpayers.”

He was commenting on the back of the political situation in the country and  the emerging campaign by the youth calling on the political leaders to #FixTheCountry, which began on social media and has generated a lot of critical mass to organize a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday ,  August 4, 2021 in the country.
