MTN Ghana have reportedly threatened to terminate their contract with the Ghana Football Association if the 2019/20 league season is curtailed.

According to Takoradi based radio station Skyy Power FM, the country’s leading telecommunication company has told the GFA to continue their season or lose their sponsorship package for the FA Cup competition.

The MTN FA Cup competition has not been effective since 2017 where the two most glamorous clubs in Ghana — Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko — met in the final which Kotoko emerged the winners after a 3-1 win over arch-rivals at the Tamale Sports Stadium.

All football activities have been suspended since mid-March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The President of Ghana, Nana Akuffo Addo has extended the ban on sporting activities to July 31, however, the FA has set June 30 as the date they decide the future of the league.

The Football Association proposed weekly testing of all players and also training in smaller groups but did not meet the expectation of the government.

Owner of Skyy Power FM, Mr. Wilson Arthur is the chairman of the FA Cup competition Committee.

MTN deal with the Ghana Football Association was announced in 2010 on the return of the FA Cup competition after a nine-year break.
