Three parliamentary candidates contesting the Weija-Gbawe seat have pledged their commitment to promoting peace before, during and after the December 7 polls.
They pledged to implore their supporters to desist from engaging in any form of violence to disrupt the peace during the electioneering in the constituency.
The parliamentary candidates made these commitments during the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Weija-Gbawe Parliamentary Candidates Dialogue.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Obeng Fynn, All Progressive Congress (APC), and Saviour Kofi Gbedze, Convention People’s Party (CPP), entreated their supporters to promote peace in all their activities.
The Parliamentary Dialogue forms part of a nationwide initiative by the NCCE to promote issue-based campaigns to ensure a peaceful process.
Mr Shaib urged his followers not to engage in politics of insults, lies, and denigration of another candidate or party.
“Engage in politics of ideas and policies. You should share your ideas and why you want to lead. We must endeavour to have a peaceful election,” he said.
The NPP parliamentary candidate said he would champion six thematic development areas when given the nod.
Ensuring access to quality healthcare, constructing drainage systems to manage floods, providing educational scholarships and infrastructure, facilitating sports development, providing employment opportunities, and empowering women would be his focus.
George Obeng, the APC parliamentary candidate, said his party was one that believed and championed peace and his supporters would not do otherwise.
Key among his plans were to champion educational development and job creation in the constituency when voted into parliament.
Mr Gbedze of the CPP said he would introduce a “Ghanaba Share” initiative to support the youth with a GHS20,000 fund to start their own businesses.
He urged constituents not to be swayed by money or gifts in their voting decisions but choose a candidate whose policies could build for them a better future.
Wisdom Ofori Ntsomai, NCCE Weija-Gbawe Municipal Director, said the event provided a platform for parliamentary candidates to present their policies and engage with constituents.
“This is not only about fostering transparency and accountability but also serving as a vital avenue for citizens to assess candidates based on their responses and promises,” he said.
