Lightwave Files Lawsuit Against Health Minister Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks

Lightwave eHealth Care Solutions Limited has taken legal action against Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, at the High Court in Accra, accusing him of making false and harmful public statements about the company’s operations and contracts with the Ministry of Health.

The suit, filed at the court’s General Jurisdiction Division, is seeking a declaration that the Minister’s comments amount to malicious falsehood, which the company says has caused significant reputational and financial damage. Lightwave is also requesting a public retraction and apology, along with compensation for economic losses and any additional relief the court may grant.

According to its statement of claim, the company entered into agreements with the Ministry of Health in 2016 and 2019 to deliver electronic healthcare systems, which it maintains were successfully completed and validated. It further states that even after the 2019 contract expired in December 2024, it continued providing services at the Ministry’s request despite delays in formal renewal and payment.

Lightwave alleges that statements made by the Minister between October and November 2025—including claims of overbilling, misrepresentation of project scope, and hosting Ghana’s electronic medical records outside the country—are inaccurate and damaging. The company also disputes assertions that it received $11 million in 2024 while delivering only a limited portion of its contracted work.

The firm says the remarks, which were reportedly made across media platforms including television interviews, have harmed its reputation locally and internationally. It further claims the controversy contributed to the suspension of a planned $50 million partnership with the World Bank.

Lightwave insists its operations have been properly documented and verified through official Ministry processes and argues that the allegations were made without due diligence.

The writ, issued on March 25, 2026, requires the Minister to respond within eight days of service or risk a default judgment. The case is expected to proceed before the High Court in Accra.
