The Central Regional Health Directorate has launched an investigation into a reported maternal death at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, following public concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In a statement dated April 29, the Directorate announced the formation of a special committee to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent review. The committee includes representatives from Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Trauma and Specialist Hospital, the Regional Health Directorate, the Regional Coordinating Council, and the Attorney-General’s office.

According to the Directorate, the committee has been tasked with establishing the facts of the case and will make its findings and recommendations public to promote accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Alberta Adjebeng Biritwum-Nyarko, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed the Directorate’s commitment to patient safety and quality maternal care. She urged the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.

    Background:
The investigation follows reports that a pregnant woman, identified as Opoku Abigail, died after allegedly being denied a caesarean section at the hospital due to a lack of available beds. According to family members, she had been referred from a private facility after prolonged labour but was unable to receive the required surgical intervention.

Relatives claim she remained in distress for several hours without adequate medical attention and died nearly 36 hours after arrival, with the baby still unborn. The incident has sparked calls for a review of operations at the facility, although hospital management has yet to publicly respond.
