Tunisia have appointed experienced French coach Hervé Renard as the new head coach of the national team following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi in the wake of the country’s crushing 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Tunisian Football Federation acted quickly after the heavy loss, which sparked widespread criticism from fans and increased pressure on the coaching staff. Lamouchi had already been under scrutiny following poor results in pre-World Cup friendlies, including disappointing performances against Austria, Belgium, and other opponents.

Appointed in January 2026, Lamouchi’s tenure lasted only five months. During that period, he managed just one victory, one draw, and three defeats before becoming the first coaching casualty of the tournament.

To revive their World Cup campaign, Tunisia have turned to Renard, one of Africa’s most accomplished international managers. The 56-year-old is expected to join the squad in Mexico immediately and will bring members of his trusted coaching team, while former captain Wahbi Khazri is set to remain within the technical setup.

Renard boasts an impressive international résumé, having guided both Zambia and Côte d’Ivoire to Africa Cup of Nations triumphs. Tunisia will hope his experience can inspire a turnaround as they prepare for crucial Group F matches against Japan and Netherlands.

With their hopes of reaching the knockout stage hanging in the balance after the defeat to Sweden, Renard’s immediate challenge will be to restore confidence and competitiveness within the Carthage Eagles squad.
