Afua Asantewaa featured on New York Times Billboard in Manhattan

Two-time Guinness World Records (GWR) contender Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum has been featured prominently on the renowned New York Times Billboard in Manhattan, New York City, in the United States.

The feature puts the Ghanaian music marathoner on one of the world’s most recognisable and busiest commercial intersections, where her image was displayed on a massive digital screen.

The development marks another major international milestone for Afua Asantewaa, whose Singathon challenge has attracted significant attention in Ghana and beyond.

In December 2023, Afua Asantewaa embarked on an ambitious five-day singing marathon in Accra, Ghana, in an attempt to break and set a Guinness World Record for the longest singing marathon.

Although she surpassed the previous record in terms of duration, Guinness World Records later ruled that her attempt was unsuccessful on technical grounds.

Undeterred, she made another attempt a year later in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city, in a renewed bid to achieve the record.

Afua Asantewaa, who is currently based in Canada, has continued to promote the Singathon brand internationally despite facing criticism and cyberbullying from some sections of the public.

Reacting to the New York billboard feature, she described it as a significant honour for herself, her country and everyone who has contributed to the growth of the Singathon brand.

“It’s an honour for me, my country, team and all who have contributed to making the Afua Asantewaa (Singathon) brand what it is today,” she said.

The New York Times Billboard is located in the Times Square area of Manhattan, one of the world’s most famous commercial and entertainment hubs. Appearances on its massive digital screens are often associated with major global brands, entertainers and public figures.

With her image now showcased in one of the world’s most iconic commercial spaces, Afua Asantewaa’s Singathon journey continues to gain international visibility.

She is also considering a possible third attempt at the singing marathon on foreign soil.
