After weeks of persistent calls from the Minority in Parliament led by Chief Minority Whip and MP for Nsawam- Adoagyiri Hon. Annoh-Dompreh coupled with sustained public pressure, the Minister for Health, Hon. Mintah Akando, is finally scheduled to appear before the House today Tuesday, 1st July 2025, to brief the nation on the COVID-19 situation.
This move comes in the wake of alarming reports of confirmed COVID-19 cases at the University of Ghana in recent weeks, sparking nationwide concern over a possible resurgence and questions about government preparedness. At a time when students, parents, and the public are worried about potential spread, silence was never an option.
“We commend Hon. Mintah Akando for eventually heeding the calls for transparency and recognizing his duty to account to the Ghanaian people. His decision to appear before Parliament is a necessary first step toward restoring public confidence and ensuring that health policy is guided by honesty and evidence” says Hon. Annoh-Dompreh.
“However, while we acknowledge this move, it is important to stress that it comes after weeks of avoidable delay. Ghanaians deserve clarity on:
•The real scale of infections and transmission trends.
•Government’s plan to contain any new outbreaks.
•The readiness of our health facilities
As a responsible opposition, we will continue to demand real answers and practical solutions. We call on Hon. Mintah Akando to use this briefing to provide clear, honest, and comprehensive information not evasions, half-truths, or mere political talk.
We further urge the government to treat this as an opportunity to rebuild trust through proactive, consistent, and transparent communication.
We stand firmly with every Ghanaian demanding better from this administration. Our people deserve leadership that prioritizes their health, safety, and wellbeing over political convenience
