The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has stripped Nana Amofa Twumasi II, the chief of Mpasaaso No. 2, in the Ahafo Ano South district, of his traditional powers for perjury.

The removal of his traditional powers together with four elders of the traditional stool, took place at the Manhyia palace in Kumasi, on Monday, March 10, 2025. The four elders were found to be complicit with the actions of the de-stooled chief.

The case involving the de-stooled chief dates to 2024, prior to the Asantehene’s ruling to resolve the chieftaincy dispute between the Ekuona Clan and the Aduana Clan of the Akrodie Stool. In the midst of the conflicting claims to the stool, the Mpasaasohene testified under oath in favour of the Aduana clan.

However, it was revealed during the hearing of the case on October 15, 2024, that the chief had been influenced by inducements, hence his false testimony. After being called to the Kumasi Traditional Council Meeting at the Manhyia Palace, the perjury charges brought against him by the de-stooled queen of Mpasaaso No. 2 and other community members, revealed additional alleged offenses.

The former queen, who was reinstated to her position, exposed Nana Twumasi’s lack of royal lineage and accused him of mismanaging the stool’s assets without implementing any development projects, maintaining no official palace in the town, and mishandling funds.

Another resident, One Frema, expressed concerns over the chief’s neglect of the black stool, which was corroborated by one Kwame Tawiah, who accused the chief of relocating the black stool under the guise of renovating the palace.

During the meeting, the five stool elders of Mpasaasohene pleaded for clemency on behalf of the chief, with one acknowledging Nana Twumasi’s breach of the Great Oath.

The divisions of the Kumasi traditional council, unanimously called for his destoolment due to the severity of perjury and other transgressions.

In delivering the verdict, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, recounted how Nana Twumasi accepted a car, money, and home renovations in exchange for his false testimony, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness in chieftaincy.

While deposing the chief, the Asantehene reinstated the queen and charged her to follow traditional procedures to select a successor for the vacant stool.
