The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has renewed calls for justice for party supporters who lost their lives during the 2024 general elections, stressing that electoral violence poses a serious threat to Ghana’s democratic progress.
Speaking at the 47th anniversary commemoration of the June 4 Uprising in Banda Ahenkro on Thursday, he urged the Inspector-General of Police to take swift action to arrest and prosecute all individuals responsible for the election-related deaths.
According to Mr. Asiedu Nketiah, accountability is essential to maintaining public confidence in the rule of law and protecting Ghana’s democratic values. He therefore called on the police leadership to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.
Addressing the gathering, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang encouraged government officials and NDC members to remain focused on the effective implementation of the government’s policies and programmes.
She highlighted the importance of unity and national cohesion, noting that the lessons of the June 4 Uprising continue to offer guidance in addressing current national challenges. She urged party members to remain committed to the ideals of sacrifice, accountability and service associated with the historic event.
Also speaking at the ceremony, NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey cautioned party members and political leaders against seeking leadership positions solely for personal gain. He stressed the need for individuals to place the interests of the party and the nation above personal ambitions and remain dedicated to the party’s core values.
As part of activities marking the anniversary, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang performed the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Banda Inner Town roads, a project aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing development in the area.
