The Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) has revealed that the Bono Region recorded 1,145 new HIV infections between January and May 2026, raising concerns over the continued spread of the virus in the region.

The Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regional Technical Coordinator of the GAC, Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, said the infections are increasing rapidly among vulnerable male and female populations.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani on Monday, July 13, Bambilla said the Commission is distributing Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as part of ongoing efforts to prevent new HIV infections.

According to the data, the Jaman South Municipality recorded the highest number of new cases with 126, followed by the Wenchi Municipality with 119.

Other districts and municipalities recorded the following cases: Tain District (112), Dormaa East District (95), Dormaa Municipal (71), Sunyani West Municipality (65), Jaman North District (60), Dormaa West District (57), Berekum West District (27), and Banda District (7).

Bambilla advised the public to avoid unprotected sexual intercourse and encouraged regular HIV testing to enable individuals to know their status.

He also stressed that early diagnosis and strict adherence to treatment are essential to reducing the spread of HIV and improving the health and quality of life of people living with the virus.
