The Water Resources Commission (WRC) has announced that Burkina Faso may begin a controlled release of water from the Bagre Dam on Tuesday, August 11, should the reservoir reach its designated trigger level of 234.00 metres.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 4, the Commission said the update was received from SONABEL, the operator of the Bagre Dam.
According to the WRC, the dam’s water level stood at 232.93 metres as of August 4, with the reservoir currently at 62.77 per cent of its capacity.
The Commission explained that the planned spillage is conditional and will only take place if the water level rises to the 234.00-metre threshold.
It advised residents living along the White Volta River and surrounding communities to remain alert and take the necessary precautions in anticipation of the possible water release.
The WRC also urged residents to strictly comply with safety instructions issued by their respective Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, as well as other relevant state institutions, to minimise the risk of flooding and protect lives and property.
The Commission said it will continue to closely monitor water levels at the Bagre Dam and provide the public with timely updates as the situation develops.
