The General Department of Immigration in Cambodia has issued a directive instructing African nationals, including citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, and Uganda, to leave the country by May 31, 2026, or risk arrest and prosecution under the country’s immigration laws.
In the official notice, authorities stated that immigration waivers previously granted to some foreign nationals would expire on May 31, 2026.
The directive explained that all affected foreigners whose penalties or fines have already been settled are expected to depart Cambodia before the stated deadline.
According to the notice, any foreign national found in Cambodia from June 1, 2026, onward without legal authorization will face immediate arrest either at the airport or any other location within the country.
Authorities further warned that violators could face up to two years imprisonment in addition to an $8,000 fine before deportation procedures are carried out.
The notice also indicated that Cambodian police will intensify operations after the deadline by tracking and arresting foreigners staying illegally in the country and handing them over to immigration officials for legal action.
Officials say the move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen immigration enforcement and ensure compliance with the country’s laws.
The announcement is expected to create concern among many affected African nationals currently residing and working in Cambodia.
