The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has announced plans to renovate and modernise the National Theatre of Ghana with support from the government of the People’s Republic of China.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026, Madam Gomashie said the intervention formed part of efforts to restore the facility’s infrastructure, improve its functionality and technical facilities, and reposition it as a world-class theatre.
She said the project also reaffirmed China’s longstanding partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector.
“The Government of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China are supporting the Ministry in the renovation and modernisation of the National Theatre of Ghana, reaffirming China’s long-standing partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector,” she said.
According to the Minister, following discussions between the Ministry and the Chinese government, a high-level delegation from China visited the National Theatre in December 2025 to assess the facility and determine the scope of the proposed renovation.
She said the project was intended to create a modern facility capable of effectively promoting Ghanaian arts and culture.
“The intervention is expected to restore and modernise the Theatre’s infrastructure, improve its functionality and technical facilities and reposition the Theatre as a world-class theatre for the promotion of Ghanaian arts and culture,” she said.
Madam Gomashie added that the Chinese government had assured Ghana of its continued cooperation to ensure that the National Theatre was maintained to high standards after the renovation.
She also disclosed that management had instituted a rigorous maintenance regime to preserve the facility and improve its overall condition.
“A rigorous maintenance regime has been instituted by the management. We have improved the security situation at the National Theatre,” she said.
The planned renovation is expected to strengthen the National Theatre’s role as a major hub for the development, promotion and preservation of Ghana’s arts and cultural heritage.
