A coalition of Assembly Members from four Electoral Areas within the Akatsi main township, have petitioned the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) to intervene in solving the perennial water crisis faced by residents of the township.

They said the call to the PURC had become necessary after they had exhausted all available avenues of engagement with the Management of the Akatsi Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), but no improvement had been seen over the period.

“With bitterness, we wish to inform the office of the PURC that Akatsi Town has been facing a problem of irregular supply of water coupled with water shortage for two months now and one could imagine how unbearable the situation would be”.

They indicated that all the necessary consultations with the authorities were made but no positive result was recorded.

The petitioners, namely Edward Doe Adade, Assembly member for Tatorme-Fiato, Wonder Gatepe from Shel-Tobacco, Benjamin Amenorpe of Lower Fiato-Anyieheme, Selorm Bestine Attivor of Anyidzime Zuta Electoral Areas, have argued in their petition that the Community Water and Sanitation officials, had failed to give them prior notices for any planned activity under the laid down rules.

“We wish to state that the entire populace of Akatsi South did not receive any notice about any planned works or any emergency repairs and we do not understand why the community should be without water for two months now,” they said.

“It has, therefore, become important for us to petition your noble office of the PURC to intervene in this matter, for the necessary measures be taken to restore water to the people,” they stated.

They also alleged that some pumping machines located at the various stations within Akatsi had been malfunctioning for months, putting pressure on consumers.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Anthony Dadzie, the Akatsi South CWSA Municipal Engineer, explained that the issue was partially attributed to a technical challenge, saying the needed pressure to pump water for distribution was below the expected strength.

He, however, assured the Coalition that its technicians were working around the clock to get the problems to restore water to the affected communities as soon as possible.
