Preparations for the funeral of Highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, have been thrown into uncertainty after the Accra High Court issued a new ruling placing an injunction on the planned burial scheduled for tomorrow.
The injunction was granted after the court found signs that the musician’s immediate family had been sidelined in the funeral planning process. The judge noted that although halting the burial could result in extra expenses, due process and inclusive consultation among all branches of the family must be upheld.
The court also reiterated that while the family head traditionally oversees funeral arrangements, this authority must be exercised in partnership with the immediate family.
As part of the ruling, the family head has been ordered to hold a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to agree on a new burial date if the injunction remains active. In addition, funds raised for the funeral must be kept separate from the accounts of the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation. The applicants were further directed to file a supporting affidavit with the court registrar.
The dispute, which emerged after Daddy Lumba’s passing on July 26, 2025, centres on competing claims between the musician’s maternal relatives and the family head over who has the right to lead the funeral. The clash reflects long-standing Akan traditions that vest funeral authority in the maternal lineage.
The court’s decision now places the immediate family under pressure to raise GH¢2 million to uphold the injunction and halt the burial planned for Saturday.
