The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed have been confirmed dead.

This was confirmed by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah. The minister, according to him, was one of four victims who reportedly lost their lives in the helicopter crash that occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The minister and the government officials were travelling to a programme in Obuasi. Reports indicated that the aircraft had three crew members and five passengers, who are believed to be top government officials.

The tragic incident occurred on August 6, 2025. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrific, with the helicopter reportedly catching fire upon impact.

The helicopter involved in the crash has been confirmed to be an aircraft of the Ghana Armed Forces. The army, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said that the helicopter, a Z9, went missing in the morning.

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and heading for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were 3 crew and 5 passengers. Further details to be communicated soon,” the statement reads.

The government officials were attending an anti-illegal mining programme, dubbed the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), at Obuasi.
