Four cases of measles have been confirmed at Kpone Kokompe in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality, prompting health authorities to intensify measures to prevent the viral infection from spreading.
Medical Superintendent of the Kpone District Hospital, Dr Jemima Quarte Mensah, disclosed the development during the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly’s General Assembly meeting at Kpone.
She said health authorities had stepped up surveillance, contact tracing and other containment measures following the confirmation of the cases.
According to Dr Mensah, contact tracing and other planned interventions had already been carried out as part of efforts to contain the outbreak and ultimately eliminate the infection from the affected community.
She urged parents and guardians to promptly report suspected measles cases to the nearest health facility for proper assessment and treatment.
Dr Mensah also cautioned residents against treating suspected cases with traditional remedies, local gin or other unapproved methods, warning that such practices could worsen the condition of patients.
She stressed that self-medication could result in serious complications and, in some cases, preventable deaths.
“Parents should not hesitate to take their children to health facilities when they suspect any signs of measles,” she advised.
The Medical Superintendent further called on schools, churches and other institutions that attract large gatherings to strengthen preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission.
She encouraged such institutions to improve hygiene practices, monitor people who display symptoms and ensure that suspected cases are referred promptly to health facilities.
Dr Mensah emphasised that cooperation between residents and health authorities would be essential in containing the outbreak, particularly through early reporting and compliance with public health guidance.
She urged residents to remain alert and support health personnel as they work to prevent the disease from spreading to other communities within the municipality.
