Ghana and Japan have deepened their bilateral cooperation with the rollout of three major initiatives targeting peacebuilding, digital transformation, and health innovation.

The projects, launched on April 15, 2026, are funded through Japan’s supplementary budget with an initial investment of about $1.5 million. They are being implemented in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme and the World Health Organization.

The initiatives include a peacebuilding programme in Bawku under the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus, a digital capacity-building project for the public sector, and an artificial intelligence-driven health programme aimed at improving healthcare delivery and addressing human security risks.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the collaboration as a demonstration of shared commitment to peace, inclusive development, and innovation, noting that the projects align with Ghana’s priorities in conflict resolution, digital governance, and universal healthcare.

National Security Advisor Prosper Bani emphasised that lasting peace goes beyond enforcement, highlighting the importance of dialogue, trust, and inclusive growth.

On digital transformation, Samuel Nartey George revealed that Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy has received Cabinet approval and will soon be launched, positioning the country as a leader in responsible AI adoption.

Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Ghana through human security-focused interventions.

A statement on behalf of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh noted that the AI-driven health initiative will enhance disease surveillance, enable early outbreak detection, strengthen data governance, and expand access to healthcare services.

Niloy Banerjee commended Japan’s continued support, describing the projects as a strong example of integrating innovation with peacebuilding and resilience. Similarly, Fiona Braka stressed the need for ethical and inclusive use of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

Zia Choudhury added that the initiatives contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals and reaffirm the UN’s commitment to Ghana’s development.

The launch event brought together government officials, development partners, and institutional stakeholders, signalling renewed momentum toward building a peaceful, resilient, and technologically advanced nation.
