The Government of Ghana has evacuated a Ghanaian national, Emmanuel Asamoah, following a viral video showing him being harassed in South Africa in what has been described as a xenophobic incident.

The widely circulated footage showed Asamoah and other foreign nationals being confronted and intimidated by individuals accusing them of taking jobs meant for locals. The incident triggered outrage among Ghanaians both at home and abroad, renewing concerns about the safety of citizens living in other African countries.

The situation reflects recurring tensions in parts of South Africa, where economic challenges and high unemployment have at times fueled hostility toward foreign nationals.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs acted quickly to secure Asamoah’s safety. Speaking to the media, Harold Agyeman, Coordinating Director in charge of Political and Economic Affairs, confirmed that the government had arranged for his safe return to Ghana.

He emphasised that protecting Ghanaian nationals abroad remains a priority and noted that authorities are relying on assurances from the South African government to address such incidents and prevent further threats to diplomatic relations.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of its citizens wherever they may be.
