The long wait for the return of football in the country came to an end last night as the Ghana Premier League began as expected. With the spread of the Coronavirus all over the world, authorities had to make crucial decisions and plan intensively for things to be in place.
Club owners, coaches and players were also prepared for the season to begin and there were no doubts. Match week 1 saw only one game played instead of two due to authorities cancelling the game between Aduana Stars and Hearts of Oak.
Just like it happened on matchday one of last season, Legon Cities could not get a victory to give their campaign a good start on the first day of the new Ghana Premier League season after they drew 1-1 with Berekum Chelsea at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.
Both teams had not played any competitive football since March and they looked very eager to get going at the start of the match.
However, it was Berekum Chelsea that got into the lead after 22 minutes when a foul in the Legon Cities penalty area and a penalty awarded.
Jonah Attuquaye levelled the score just 12 minutes later after another penalty was awarded but this time to Legon Cities. The first half ended in a draw with both teams satisfied with their performances.
Both teams were eager to get all maximum points but the second half failed to produce major action.
However, Berekum Chelsea could have taken the lead late in the game but Kofi Owusu failed to find the back of the net after going past a number of Legon Cities defenders.
The two teams face tougher opposition in match week 2 but will be hoping things go their ways.
Legon Cities face Great Olympics while Berekum Chelsea face Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
