The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Italian engineering and manufacturing company DANIELI & C. Officine Meccaniche S.P.A to advance Ghana’s aluminium industrialisation agenda.

The agreement, signed at the residence of the Italian Ambassador to Ghana, forms part of efforts under President John Dramani Mahama’s industrial transformation drive and supports plans to develop an Integrated Industrial Park within the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone.

Under the MoU, Danieli has indicated its intention to invest about €300 million in Ghana’s downstream aluminium sector. The investment will focus on the establishment of key industrial facilities aimed at increasing value addition and boosting exports.

A major component of the project is an aluminium foil rolling plant expected to produce between 40,000 and 45,000 tonnes annually across multiple product categories, serving industries such as packaging, pharmaceuticals, food service, and manufacturing.

The agreement also includes the creation of a Centre of Excellence dedicated to training, research, and innovation in advanced aluminium processing. The facility is expected to function as a regional hub for skills development and technology transfer.

Speaking at the signing, representatives of the Danieli Group described the initiative as an opportunity for Ghana to transform its natural resources into high-value industrial products, while reaffirming the company’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s industrial growth.

The Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, expressed support for the partnership, describing it as a reflection of growing industrial cooperation between Ghana and Italy.

The Chief Executive Officer of GIADEC, Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, said the deal marks a strategic shift towards building a fully integrated aluminium value chain in Ghana. He added that GIADEC will continue to partner with credible global investors to position the country as a manufacturing hub in West Africa.

The proposed industrial facilities will be located within the Integrated Industrial Park in Tema, being developed by ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms in partnership with GIADEC and the Tema Development Corporation.

Officials say the location offers strategic advantages, including proximity to VALCO’s smelting operations, Tema Port, and existing industrial infrastructure, which will support export-oriented production.

The project is expected to promote value addition, create jobs, and strengthen Ghana’s manufacturing base, while also enhancing skills development through the Centre of Excellence.

It is also projected to improve Ghana’s export competitiveness and increase foreign exchange earnings through aluminium foil and other processed products targeted at international markets.

Stakeholders from GIADEC, Danieli Group, the Italian Embassy, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources witnessed the signing ceremony.
