More than 1,500 journalists, media executives, academics, policymakers and civil society representatives from over 100 countries have assembled in Bonn for the opening of the 2026 DW Global Media Forum 2026, a major international conference focused on journalism, democracy and global dialogue.

Held under the theme “Journalism Out Loud!”, the three-day event opened at the historic auditorium of Germany’s former parliament, bringing together media professionals and thought leaders to discuss the future of journalism amid rapid changes in the global information environment.

Opening the forum, Barbara Massing called on journalists and media organisations worldwide to remain steadfast in defending truth, accountability and democratic principles despite growing challenges posed by misinformation, disinformation and declining public trust in institutions.

She underscored the critical role of independent journalism in protecting democratic societies and ensuring citizens have access to accurate and reliable information.

This year’s forum is examining a broad range of issues affecting the media industry, including artificial intelligence, press freedom, journalist safety, media sustainability, climate reporting and strategies for restoring public confidence in news organisations.

Among the participants is Samuel Attah-Mensah, who is representing Citi FM and Channel One TV at the gathering of global media leaders and practitioners.

His participation highlights the commitment of both media organisations to international engagement, professional development and innovation at a time when journalism continues to evolve in response to technological advancements, shifting audience preferences and changing business models.

The forum offers participants an opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences and explore innovative solutions that can strengthen journalism, public discourse and democratic governance.

Organised annually by Deutsche Welle (DW), Germany’s international broadcaster, the Global Media Forum has become one of the world’s leading platforms for discussions on media development, press freedom and freedom of expression.

As deliberations get underway in Bonn, participants are united by a common message: journalism remains essential to democracy and must continue to operate independently, courageously and responsibly in an increasingly complex global landscape.
