The Ghana Tourism Authority has launched its “16×16 Initiative,” a nationwide campaign aimed at bringing the excitement of the FIFA World Cup 2026 closer to Ghanaians.

The initiative was unveiled on Friday, March 27, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, describing it as a “dream come true” designed to create a shared national experience.

Under the programme, 16 public viewing centres will be set up across the country—one in each region—offering free, high-quality communal spaces for citizens to watch World Cup matches from June 11 to July 12, 2026.

“Today, we are not just launching an initiative, we are living a dream come true,” she said. “We are igniting a national experience designed to bring the World Cup closer to every Ghanaian.”

She noted that while many Ghanaians are passionate about football, not all will be able to travel to the host countries—United States, Canada, and Mexico—making the initiative an inclusive way for fans to participate.

“This is dedicated to those who will be here, cheering our team. No Ghanaian should be left out of this global moment,” she added.

Beyond football, the Authority said the initiative is designed to boost tourism, strengthen community engagement, and stimulate local economies. Each viewing centre is expected to serve as a hub for food vendors, artisans, performers, and transport operators.

“With 16×16, we are turning every region into a hub where sports meet culture, where local businesses thrive, and where Ghana tells her story,” Mrs Houadjeto said.

The project is being implemented in partnership with Tribe Cultural Fest, with support from the embassies of the World Cup host nations, as part of efforts to promote cultural exchange and international

The initiative is also expected to encourage domestic tourism, as participants explore attractions within host regions during the tournament period.

The Ghana Tourism Authority said the 16×16 Initiative would not only unite citizens through football but also position tourism as a driver of national cohesion and economic growth.
