Every February 14, couples, friends, and families express their love in various forms ranging from gifts and acts of lovely services.
Gifts on this occasion include flowers, teddy bears, cars and sometimes a trip to separate locations in and outside the country.
Although July 7 marks World Chocolate Day, the Ghana Tourism Authority in 2005 instituted National Chocolate Day to the February 14 event.
Ghana News Agency (GNA) interacting with some citizens expressed varied views on the day and some activities associated with it.
Madam Grace Adanu, a trader said the introduction of National Chocolate Day was to reduce the illicit behaviour young people exhibited over the years. She said there was much to be done in sensitizing the public on the Day.
Madam Adanu said she was expecting a gift from her spouse while she would also celebrate her spouse and children. Mr Enoch Dandzo, a driver said the addition of Chocolate Day would promote the patronage of Ghanaian. He said the benefits of chocolate was also a good reason for its patronage, but the prices of chocolates must be looked at to make them affordable even beyond the celebration.
Auntie Maadwoa, a vendor in chocolate, said on such occasions, she also added teddy bears and flowers to her sales adding that they were mostly not patronised on a normal day. She believed although the day was to show love, some people bore costs they had not budgeted for in a bid to impress their loved ones.
Auntie Maadwoa said appreciation could be expressed in little ways devoid of incurring costs. A lot of pubs, bars, spots, beaches, and hotels are expected to cash out from the event which fell on a weekend this year .
