The National Identification Authority, in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority, has announced the resumption of Ghana Card registration for children between the ages of 6 and 14, starting May 5, 2026.
Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku said the exercise aims to register about 3.1 million children nationwide as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s national identification system and promote early inclusion.
The registration will begin in the Volta Region and Oti Region, with a phased rollout across other regions. Each phase is expected to last at least 21 days to ensure wide coverage.
Parents or guardians are required to present a child’s birth certificate, valid Ghanaian passport, or certificate of acquired citizenship. In cases where these are unavailable, an Oath of Identity form may be completed by a relative or guardian, while Social Welfare Officers can vouch for children without known relatives.
The NIA also advised parents to present their children’s NHIS details where applicable and noted that individuals accompanying children must be Ghanaian adults with valid Ghana Cards.
Children who registered during the 2024 pilot but have not yet received their cards are encouraged to visit their original registration centres for collection, as duplicate registration attempts will be blocked.
The Authority urged eligible families to participate in the exercise and warned that providing false information or attempting to register non-Ghanaians will attract legal penalties, including fines or imprisonment.
The initiative forms part of the NIA’s broader commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and reliable national identity system.
