The Appointments Committee of Parliament is expected to vet Dr Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings today, Tuesday, August 25, following her nomination by President John Dramani Mahama as Minister-designate for Environment, Science and Technology.
Her vetting comes after Parliament was recalled from recess for a five-day emergency sitting to consider urgent government business.
When the House reconvened on Monday, August 24, Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin referred the President’s ministerial nominations to the Appointments Committee for consideration and approval.
The Committee is also expected to vet Mahama Ayariga, who has been nominated as Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, as well as three nominees for the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court nominees are Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and Justice Anthony Forson Junior.
Why Parliament Was Recalled
Speaker Bagbin explained that the emergency sitting, scheduled to end on August 28, 2026, followed a request from President Mahama.
According to the Speaker, he received a letter from the President dated August 11, 2026, requesting Parliament’s recall to deal with urgent matters ahead of the next planned recall in October.
Among the key matters before the House is the consideration and passage of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
The House is also expected to consider the President’s nominations for the Supreme Court.
Mahama Ayariga Remains Majority Leader
Speaker Bagbin also clarified the status of the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business following Mahama Ayariga’s nomination as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
He explained that although President Mahama has nominated Ayariga for the ministerial position, he continues to occupy the Majority Leader’s seat until the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) formally informs Parliament of any change.
The clarification means Ayariga remains Majority Leader for the time being, pending any official communication from the governing party to the House.
