Transport unions in Ghana are planning to withdraw their services in the capital city, Accra, starting Today, September 16.
Their intended action is in protest of a private developer ejecting drivers operating at Central Business District (CMB). This decision is likely to cause disruptions to commuters in the city.
The unions are staging a protest, urging authorities to take immediate action to address their concerns, and will continue until their issues are resolved.
The forced eviction has not only affected drivers but also brought trading activities to a standstill, depriving people of their livelihood.
The unions and traders claim they have occupied the land for decades, with developers gradually taking over portions, leaving them with limited space.
According to the leaders of the unions, they will march to the Jubilee House to present a petition to President John Dramani Mahama.
They have declared that all drivers, especially those serving the central business district, will cease operations in solidarity with the protest.
They are resisting the latest takeover, with the Chairperson of the Containers Owners Association stating they have had enough and would not allow anyone to take over their means of survival.
