Tulenkey Wins Big at TGMA but Stays Silent – The Meaning Behind the Taped Mouth

One of the most talked-about and mystifying moments at the 26th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) came not from a performance or a speech — but from a deliberate act of silence. Ghanaian rapper Tulenkey, known for his lyrical dexterity and bold storytelling, made a powerful entrance on awards night dressed in all-black with gray tape across his mouth, refusing to speak a single word during his red carpet appearance or media interviews.

    But that wasn’t all.

Later in the night, when “Bad Feeling” — his hit collaboration with Beeztrap KOTM — was announced as the Best Hiplife Song of the Year, Tulenkey took to the stage to receive his award. Still, not a word was uttered. With his mouth still taped, he acknowledged the crowd with simple gestures, held up his plaque, and walked off — maintaining a silence that now felt deafening.

While many winners used their time on stage to thank fans, producers, and team members, Tulenkey used his absence of speech to spark presence. The contrast was striking — a celebrated rapper, finally receiving recognition on one of the biggest platforms in Ghanaian music, choosing not to speak at all.

The visual and emotional impact of that moment was undeniable. Fans and industry insiders were left wondering: What is Tulenkey trying to say by saying nothing?

Possible Interpretations: Protest, Frustration, or Artistry?

Although Tulenkey has not released an official explanation, the act has stirred wide-ranging interpretations:

    • A protest against the industry? Perhaps he feels artists like himself are being muted, underappreciated, or overlooked despite consistent work and cultural relevance.

    • Commentary on censorship or creative suppression? Artists often face pressure to conform, avoid controversy, or water down their messages. Could the taped mouth represent how he feels stifled?

    • A strategic artistic expression? Tulenkey has always been calculated in his moves. Maybe this moment is part of a larger message — possibly tied to an upcoming project or a broader campaign.

Whatever the reason, the silence worked. It got people talking, speculating, and reflecting — and in a way, that’s what great artistry often does.

Ironically, Tulenkey’s biggest win of the night — Best Hiplife Song of the Year for Bad Feeling — is a track that speaks about distrust, emotional imbalance, and internal conflict. The title alone, “Bad Feeling”, now seems even more layered when viewed against his silent protest. Was the tape an extension of those bad feelings? A response to what he feels behind the curtains of fame and awards?

His collaborator, Beeztrap KOTM, also remained subtle, letting the moment be owned by Tulenkey’s unspoken message.

In a time where everyone is expected to shout, post, or perform, Tulenkey reminded us that silence can speak volumes. Whether it was frustration, performance art, or protest — he made sure people paid attention.

Until Tulenkey chooses to explain, the meaning remains open. But one thing is certain: he didn’t just win Best Hiplife Song of the Year — he won the conversation of the night.
