The Bono Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has intensified its efforts against illegal mining activities after seizing 11 excavators, eight tricycles and 32 motorbikes from illegal mining sites across the region.
Bono Regional Minister and Chairman of REGSEC, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, said the confiscation of the equipment demonstrates the Council’s continued commitment to combating illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and protecting communities affected by its activities.
Speaking during an engagement with journalists in Sunyani, Mr. Akwaboa rejected suggestions that the Council had reduced its operations against illegal miners, insisting that the fight remains a key priority.
He said the seizures reflect REGSEC’s proactive approach in preventing the expansion of illegal mining activities and addressing their environmental and social consequences.
“The seizure of these equipment shows that we are still committed to the fight against galamsey. We have not slowed down our operations,” he stated.
The Regional Minister, however, emphasised that the success of the anti-galamsey campaign requires more than government action and security interventions.
He called for stronger collaboration from residents in mining communities, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to help achieve lasting solutions.
Mr. Akwaboa noted that while REGSEC will continue to intensify enforcement measures, sustainable progress will depend on collective efforts to ensure mining activities are carried out legally and responsibly.
He reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to protecting the environment and enforcing regulations governing mining operations in the Bono Region.
