The Mampong and Nsuta Constituencies Chapter of the Professionals Forum (Proforum) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the newly nominated Ashanti Regional Minister-designate.
Dr. Amoakohene, medical doctor by profession and a prominent figure within the NDC and former Regional Secretary, has been recognized for his exceptional leadership and dedication leading to emphatic victory in the December 2024 general elections. Mr. Duut Kwame Bìilah, a senior member of the Proforum Mampong and Nsuta Constituencies Chapter, expressed his excitement over Dr. Amoakohene’s appointment in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency. He emphasized that this recognition was well-deserved, highlighting Dr. Amoakohene’s hard work and commitment to public service.
He stated, “On behalf of our esteemed chapter, I am thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations on your well-deserved appointment. This honor is a true reflection of your hard work, dedication, and exceptional leadership skills.” Dr. Amoakohene’s appointment follows President John Dramani Mahama’s recent electoral victory in the December 2024 general elections. This marks a significant milestone for the National Democratic Congress, as the party secured 33 per cent of the presidential votes, the highest since 1992, when it garnered 32.9 per cent, and 32.8 per cent in 1996.
Additionally, the number of parliamentary seats won by the party in Ashanti region has increased significantly to 10, up from just three in 2020. Mahama’s administration has committed to a strategic approach during his nonconsecutive second term, prioritizing efficiency by proposing to downsize the ministerial portfolio. The President aims to reduce the number of ministers to 60, a notable departure from former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government, which had an extensive cabinet of 120 ministers in its first term.
Speaking with the GNA on Monday, Mr. Vitus Doozie, Chair of Proforum Mampong and Nsuta Constituencies noted the decision reflected President Mahama’s desire to streamline governance and enhance accountability within his administration. During his tenure as Regional Secretary, he noted that Dr. Amoakohene played a crucial role in the NDC’s remarkable success in the recent elections. His tireless efforts in mobilizing supporters and executing effective campaign strategies contributed significantly to the party’s gains in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the New Patriotic Party.
Mr. Doozie highlighted Dr. Amoakohene’s wealth of experience and visionary approach, expressing confidence that these attributes will greatly benefit the Ashanti Region. “We eagerly anticipate the positive impact of your initiatives,” he stated. Dr. Amoakohene’s unwavering commitment to public service has inspired many, particularly the youth, within the party and the community. His past initiatives have aimed at improving the lives of citizens, and the Proforum is optimistic that his new role will lead to further development and success in a region rich in natural resources like gold and cocoa.
However, the average unemployment rate in the Ashanti Region is approximately 5.02 per cent, which closely trails the Greater Accra Region, where the average unemployment rate is the highest at 7.69 per cent. Both regions are predominantly urbanized. However, the Ghana 2021 Population and Housing Census data also reveals a more concerning unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24, at 32.8 per cent.
With a strong mandate from the electorate and a commitment to effective governance, President Mahama’s administration is poised for a transformative journey in the coming years. The success of Dr. Amoakohene as Regional Minister will be closely watched as the NDC strives to fulfill its promises to the people of the Ashanti Region and beyond.
